American Illustration | Winner

I'm thrilled to have been selected as one of the AI's 2023 winners for my Summer Travel photo illustration! I am grateful for the opportunity to share my message with a wider audience.


Here is a little bit about how it all came together.

When I was creating the illustration, my main goal was to convey the frustrations of summer travel. So I decided to use typography and a play on logos to convey the message. I used words and phrases that no traveler likes to hear, like "delayed," "overbooked," and "canceled," to show just how frustrating summer travel can be. By incorporating these elements into the plane design, I was able to not only convey the message but also offer the viewer a bit of a double take.


To create a more inclusive image that would resonate with viewers regardless of their airline loyalty, I carefully selected a Getty image that featured several airlines. This gave me the opportunity to play around with typography styles and associate each logo with its respective message and it also offered a bit of visual interest. My goal was to create an impactful image that would connect with a wide audience and effectively communicate the concept of the editorial.

Overall, the execution of the piece was relatively simple once I had the concept and found the correct image. It was really important to me to create art that was visually striking and effectively communicated the message. Looking back, I am proud of how it all came together.
